Em hotep nefer my friends! Since I am still feeling a bit of the ancient Egyptian theme from our new episode "Curses!" I decided to head over to my La-Bar-atory and see if I couldn't formulate something with the flavors of the Nile. The result is in and I have named it "The Cup of Ura-Ho-Tep."

  • 1/4 oz Pomegranate juice
  • 3/4 oz Date syrup (honey as a substitute)
  • 2 oz Wheat Whiskey
  • A Lager beer

Combine all ingredients save the beer in an ice filled shaker and shake thoroughly. Strain into an ice filled highball glass and top with the beer.

Beer, you say? Beer in a cocktail? Yes, have you not heard of a boilermaker? Beer was of great importance in ancient Egypt. Imbibed by man woman and child, rich and poor, it was a staple to nearly every meal. In fact, it was in beer that the worker who assembled the great pyramids were paid! Any cocktail in this theme must have beer. Pomegranates and Dates were common fruit of the area (although Pomegranate was an import) so it behooves me to include those flavors as well. As honey was common as well, and you may not have date syrup in your local general store, substituting it for the date is possible. However you won't have the same experience. The Whiskey? Well, a bit of a kick was needed and as distiller spirits were unknown in that era I fudged in favor of something distilled from wheat, which was common. Not to mention adding a hint of British Imperialism, under which so many of these mummies and artifacts were (ahem) shipped around the globe.  It is also essentially distilled beer and so we have come full circle!

Em Heset net Ra!
